Following the twin success recently of Sing and Shoot 1 and 2, broadcast journalist Kuya Daniel Razon announced that future installments of the charity concert and basketball match will be held as a league at UNTV and will fund more charities.
While the first two series of Sing and Shoot helped finance the full scholarships of hundreds of students enrolled at La Verdad Christian College, the beneficiaries of the upcoming league will include other charitable institutions.
“UNTV is creating a basketball game for public servants and celebrities. This will become a regular event which will be aired at UNTV,” Kuya Daniel said in the vernacular through a pre- recorded video aired during the half-time break of the basketball game of Sing and Shoot 2.
Kuya Daniel added that the public servant participants can name charitable institutions that they want to help according to some guidelines.
“We will let the participants choose their beneficiaries and we will assist in mounting events of this kind,” explained by the broadcast journalist.
Public servants and celebrities returned to Smart-Araneta Coliseum last June 11, 2012 for their second match.
A mix of new and returning personalities entered the court for both teams. Government officials were led by PBA coach Bo Perasol and PNP Chief Nicanor Bartolome, who is a returning player for this match.
Other players of the team included fellow original participants from Congress – Sherwin Tugna, Sigfrido Tinga, Erin Tañada III – and the Supreme Court with Atty. Midas Marquez and Mr. Rodel Chua. Event rookies, including PNP’s Roque Ramirez and Marlon Tiglao, Joseph Cabanting, Dennis Escalona, Arnel Cerafica, completed the line-up.
Team Celebrities also had new players to maintain their winning streak. Joining past players Ervic Vijandre, Zoren Legaspi, Kier Legaspi, Brando Legaspi, Eric Fructuoso and Bentot were Jordan Herrera, John Hall, Jeffrey Santos, Dinky Doo, Jr., Dave Almarinez, Rey “PJ” Abellana, and FPJ look-a- like Bobby Henson. Tirso Cruz III, another veteran actor, replaced Philip Salvador as team coach.
During the game, the celebrities steadily maintained the lead for the first half, scoring 48 points to 38 by halftime. Public servants reduced it to two points, earning 70 points versus 72 in the third quarter. Then the excitement escalated as minute after minute teams exchanged hoops, climaxing as the crowd roared a la championship match during the final seconds when the score evened to 103 points at the end of the fourth quarter.
Reaping 30 points, John Hall from Team Celebrities was awarded Most Valuable Player. Congressman Sherwin Tugna of the public servants team was declared co-MVP with 25 points.
